My Email From Space by Karl

For homework we were asked to write an essay/email from space. Here is my finished draft

subject: Space Adventure
                                                                          Day 1 31/1/16
Hi Ben,
Karl here. I'm sending this email to you from Apollo 64, Yasa space craft module. We floated past
the moon and saw the U.S.A flag implanted on the moon. We went to The Red Planet also known as Mars,
one of the terestrial planets (The Rocky Planets). Adam and I played volleyball on Mars. We did a few back flips on the moon. That was our 1st day in space

                                                                          DAY 2 1/1/16
The next day we flew to Jupiter. Because its a gas planet you couldn't stand on it, but with our special designed space suits we could. The rocket could land but we were still tethered to the rocket just in case anything happened to us we wouldn't get lost. After that we flew back to the moon because Luke left his phone on the top of the Irish flag we implanted in the ground. Luke flew us back but the rocket fuel was nearly gone so we took Luke's phone and headed back to the space camp on Mars.
                                        
                                                                          DAY 3 2/2/16
On the next day we flew to Mercury. It was so hot  we heated up a hot a zip close bag and put a rock inside it. As quick as possible we got off Mercury and went to Venus. It wasn't as hot but it was still hot. We stayed there for about a half an hour longer than Mercury but we did the same thing with the zip close bag and the rock.

                                                                          DAY 4 3/2/16
After Venus we ventured far down into the solor system to Saturn. Since it's rings are made from dust and asteroids, the whole crew jumped from asteroid to asteroid to get around. After that we had a party at the camp celebrating that we had survived four successful days in space, which kind of scared me a bit because at any time in those four days, Jake,Adam Luke,Jack or myself could have died.
              
                                                                          DAY 5 4/2/16 
We woke up.We knew it was our last day in space. We gathered our stuff and hopped on the rocket. We flew to Neptune. We collected a rock and flew back to the moon. We took a photo and played some game. We decided to stay and go back to Earth the next day which is tomorrow.

TRASH: by Andy Mulligan

 

These past few weeks our class have been reading a book called "Trash". The book was written by Andy Mulligan. The book is about three boys, Raphael, Gardo and Rat / Jun Jun. The boys by mistake come across a very important find. A bag that contains lots of money and very important stuff. The boys are puzzled when the police come along and ask about the bag. But the boys say that they know nothing about it. When the police find out that the boys are up to something they hunt the boys across the whole city.

  The items in the bag are part of an investigation that involves stolen money. The boys are ahead of the police and look for clues. To lose the police the boy want to go to a different island to live away from the police. In this book Andy Mulligan really tells us about how the kids live in the Philippines. The poor kids in the Philippines live in trash. They kids collect trash and sell it for a living. It is sad to know how the kids live in poverty in places like the Philippines. 

We drew alternate covers for Trash and will enter a competition.  'One of the most exiting and original novels of the year' - Daily Mail, 'A brilliant book' - John Boyne, author of The Boy in the striped Pyjamas. 

The reason why we are reading this book is because it is part of the one book one community project. We do this every year. The whole community comes together and reads a book. And this year we are reading Trash.

The Fruits off the Holy Spirt

The Fruits of the Holy Spirit . are Love, Joy,Kindness ,Patience ,Self-control ,Goodness ,Peace, Gentleness and Trustfulness.
Love : Love is when you give someone a hug or a kiss when they are feeling down about something bad.

Joy  :  Joy is when your happy and in a good mood with others.

Kindness : Kindness is when you give up your seat for a old lady or man on the bus.

Patience : Patience is when your waiting for something and respecting others

Self-control : Self-control is when you behave when others are not behaving in a good way and not getting involved .

Goodness : Goodness is when you let others join in with you and your friends.

Peace: Peace is when we all live in harmony and when you settle arguments without fighting.

Gentleness : Gentleness is when you don't play to rough with your younger siblings.

Trustfulness : Trustfulness is when your friend tells you a secret and you keep it to yourself.

That is all of the fruits off the holy spirit.

The Solar System

Last week we learned all about the Solar System. The Solar System is made up of all the planets that orbit our Sun. The Sun contains around 98% of all the material in our solar system. Scientists believe that the Solar System evolved from a giant cloud of dust and gas. The outer planets are largely made of gas and water, while the inner planets are made up almost entirely of rock and dust.Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are the names of the planets in our solar system .

Inis Óirr Part 1

Miss Sunderland here. I'm having a serious case of FOMO that I couldn't go to the Aran Islands with the boys this year. Mark and Mr McIntyre have been keeping me up to date with how the boys are getting on. They look like they're having a ball. Here's a few snaps so far, including photographic evidence that the boys are going to heaven! Local legend has it that if you fit through the window in the old church you're guaranteed a spot up there. What I wanna know is where is the picture of Mark??? ;)

Congratulations Dane!

A huge congratulations to Dane McKenna who won the Art and Hobby Shop's Easter competition!

Each boy in the school was given a foam Easter egg to decorate. Dane chose to make his into a minion. His creative design was chosen not only as the best in the school but in the whole competition. 

It's currently on display in the Art and Hobby Shop in the Jervis Shopping Centre.

A big thanks to Ms Murphy for organising the completion entries  for us. 

Our Ceremony of Light

As part of our preparation for our Confirmation the boys had their Ceremony of Light in the church tonight.

All of the boys turned up at the church with a candle in hand and their sponsor or someone from home. 

Brandon did a great job reading the first reading and Nathan, Cian and Dane read the prayers of the faithful wonderfully.

Near the end of the ceremony all of the boys and girls were invited up onto the altar. The adults with them then lit their candles and passed them on to the boys in a symbol of passing on their faith.

We are all really looking forward to the big day now on June 13th!

It's all Greek!

We are doing a project at the moment all about Greece. We are learning all about the countries geography and it's ancient history.

Did you know Greece is one and a half times the size of Ireland? It has a population of 10 million.

We are learning all about Ancient Greek gods such as Ares, Apollo and Zeus. Here's a picture of us researching information for our projects.

Letter from the USA!

Today we received letters from out penpals in Toledo, Ohio! 

We wrote to them in February and we were very excited to see their replies today. 

We are going to write back tomorrow and tell them all about our Confirmation and Aran Islands trip that we have coming up. 

The Larriers are Victorious!!

It's official, the Larriers have brought home the glory!! The boys in 6th class have won the table quiz for the One Book One Community project.
Before we get into some more showboating let us tell you a bit more about the project.
One Book One Community is an innative run by the home school liason teachers in the North Inner City. Pupils in 6th class and in first year from 19 schools all read the same book as well as parents in the community too. This project has been taking place for over 5 years now and is a great success. This year we all read the book 'The Blue Horse' by Marita Conlon McKenna. The book explores themes such as predjudice and a sense of home and belonging and is told through the story of Kaite Connors, a 12 year old traveller. It proved to be a very popular novel and we were even lucky enough to have the author Marita speak at the opening and closing ceremonies.
Back to the good news ........ The brainbox team comprising of Dane, Ben, Adam and Callum narrowly beat off the competition to take home the trophy for the Larriers. This is the first time we have won at the quiz and the trophy will be proudly displayed in our reception area.

A Trip to Mud Island

On a sunny Wednesday morning in March, the boys from 6th class went on a trip with Martina Galvin as part of an ongoing art project that we are doing. We went to see the community gardens at Mud Island on the North Strand. We were also lucky enough to have a tour of the Dublin City Corporation gardens given to us by Marie Staunton. We set off and met Martina at the Charleville Library at 9.30 in the morning. It was a lovely day and we were glad not to be in the classroom. We walked down the gardens together. They are hidden in behind the Cosy Café on the strand, it was the first time a lot of us were there. We were told that they are called Mud Island gardens because long ago, all of the North Strand was mud due to how close the sea was and that now the land has been reclaimed and put to good use.
We walked around the garden and looked at all of the different plants that are growing there. We saw purple sprouting broccoli, spring onions, potatoes, garlic, spearmint, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, cabbages, rocket and much more. We learnt that all of these are planted by people in our community and that anyone can go to the gardens to help out. They are open Tuesday and Saturday afternoons. During the summer there is plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables that you can take away.

After exploring the garden, we took some time out and sat and drew some of the things that we could see. A few of us drew daffodils, crab apple trees, figs and some of the art work that we saw on the railings. Martina took samples of the plants so that we could look at them and draw them in closer detail back in school.

Mr. Bailey was chatting to one of the men working in the next garden over. He said that it was part of the Larkin Centre run through Dublin City Corporation and that they would show us around. We learnt a lot of new things such as:

• If a growing potato comes in contact with the sun it will turn green. A green potato is poisonous.
• There is such a thing as ornamental cabbages!
• They grow herbaceous plants. Herbaceous plants come back every year, the flower dies but the roots are still alive under the ground.
• We saw figs for the first time, they make up the filling for fig rolls!
• We learnt how to make a clone of a tree, this saves money but it’s also good if the plant is a very good plant and you’d like a copy of it.
• RTE send out potato blight warnings. If a warning is sent out they spray the potato leaves with fungicide. If they had’ve cut off the leaves of the potato plants during the famine the potatoes would have been small but still ok to eat.
• We saw a stump of a tree that now has moss, ferns and mushrooms growing on it.
• We learnt that they cover the soil that strawberries are growing in with a black sacks with holes in it. This means that the strawberries grow above ground, aren’t covered in muck and don’t get mould on them.
• A lot of the plants that are grown there are sent all over Dublin to places like St. Annes Park and Stephens Green.


We got a chance to plant some cress. We were also given a plant for our school. It’s a baby plant so we have to keep it covered in plastic for a few weeks to keep it warm until it is strong enough to go outside. We can’t wait to go back because we are going to plant pumpkins that they are going to give us at Halloween!

We then went of a little walk around the canal and had a look at the memorial garden for the North Stand Bombing. After all of this we went back to the school where we did some drawing with Martina. We drew more plants but with greater detail. We had a great morning and learnt lots about plants and gardening. Adam, Shane, Ben and Dane.

Claude Monet

About a fortnight ago, our class was learning about the artist Claude Monet in the classroom. We were learning about him as an art lesson. We tried to copy a painting of his called 'The Japanese Bridge'. The painting was painted with painted with water colours. He was an Impressionist artist and was around in the late 1800's. Claude Monet joined the army when he was 21 and he went to Africa with them. His aunt begged him to leave the army and paid for him to go to art college if he gave it up. The Japenese Bridge is a colourful painting, full of flowers. I really enjoyed learning about it.

Summer Recount

Back in May Robert, my best friend, and I were in the pitch playing shots. We were playing shots because it was scorching out. When Robert and I were going the pitch there was already lots of people there. We hoped over the board and put our boots on .First I walked a bit with the ball and shot and shot it in the goal. I hit the crossbar and it rolled back out and Robert struck it and it flew in the top corner and I applauded him . After that we played heads & volleys with Ross Fay and Brian Mccarthy . The game only lasted five minutes. Next Scott Muka Lawless and Justin Anene came and we all had a game of crossins. On the day I really really enjoyed it and I picked up some new tricks on the evening . I would love another one of those days.

6th Class are Shooting Hoops in Trinity!

On November the 13th sixth class went to learn basketball in Trinity College. The weather was atrocious so we had to get Sammi Murphy's bus. Trinity College is running a programme called TAP and we have an hour to play basketball once a week. First we did a drill that Scott and Dylan had to demonstrate. It was just passing it to each other. Then he told us about the 5 lines on the amazing court. 1) end line 2) side line 3) halfway line 4) three point line 5) the foul line. After that we had a match and we were getting beaten but only for Scott, he got the equalizing point to make it a draw at 1 -1 and our team mate Cian got a smack of the ball in the face. I think basketball was class and it was my first time playing it and I am actually good at it. If I got a scholarship I would take it. I can't to go next week. One Book One Community - Once

We are reading the book Once by Morris Gleitzman. We are reading it because it is the book chosen for One Book, One Community. There are 16 school in the North Inner City reading the book. The book is based in Poland in 1942 during World War 2. The book is about a Jewish boy called Felix who escaped from an orphanage and met a girl called Zelda. They both tried to get to to the city when they were caught by Nazis. They thought the Nazis could help them find there parents but we know there parents are dead. But instead the Nazis brought them to a ghetto when they ran out of the line. They thought the Nazis were burning Jewish books until they saw a Jews person get shot. Then a man called Barney hid them in a cellar were he was hiding and feeding several other kids. I really like this book so far. We are learning all about World War 2 in history. By Josh Doran I would really recommend this book to others.

Indian in the Cupboard

Author: Lynn Reid Banks

    I have read the book, Indian in the Cupboard, by Lynn Reid Banks. It’s based in London. It mainly takes place in Omri’s, the main characters, bedroom and in a school.

   The characters are Omri, Patrick, Little bull and Boone. My favourite character is Little Bull he is bossy, dangerous and crazy. He wears moccasins and a chief hat with feathers. He is my favourite character because he is 7cm toy that had being changed from plastic to real life. He shot a cowboy called Boone in the chest with a bow and arrow.

     The plot begins with getting a cupboard for Omri’s birthday, he got the cupboard of his brother also he got a plastic Indian of his friend Patrick. In the night he put the Indian in the cupboard and locked it with the a key he got of his mam.

     The climax is when Omri bring the cowboy and Indian in to school. He gives them to Patrick. Then Patrick goes to the principal and showed them to him. The principal was so shocked he went home. Omri was very angry.

     The book is funny, gory, interesting also it was also to read.

     I like the book because there was a lot of magic in it. My favourite part about the book was when the chief Indian died over a heart attack.

    The book is easy to read.

    I would rate the book 10/10

Best Christmas Ever by William Mc Carthy

One cold Christmas morning… I heard something on the roof climbing down the chimney I snuck down the stairs I saw some fat fella in a bright red suit with a red hat and a white ball at the end. It was Santa Clause! He was putting two YZ 85 scramblers under the Christmas tree with the rest of my presents. He ate all the delicious Christmas cookies and drank an ice cold glass of Avonmore milk.  He took the orange carrot off the plate and he put in his pocket for Rudolph his reindeer with the very shiny nose . I ran up- stairs to wake my brother up. When he woke up, the two of us ran down stairs to see if he was still there. He was gone. The two of us took off our pj’s and put on some old clothes. Then we went back down stairs and opened the big front door very quietly then wheeled out our YZ 85s. The two YZ 85s started first kick!. The two of us went all over to look for Santa Cause. We looked up at the dark sky. There he was on his way back to the North pole. So then we knocked for my friend. My friend opened the door he was ready to come out on his KX 65. Just then he asked me for a race from Sheriffer up to the Sunset. I said yeah. He was winning at the start but when I got on a straight road my YZ 85 left him for dust. It was the best Christmas Ever.  

We are doing a project on the Rosie Hackett Bridge. We are going to be displaying our project in the BT Young Scientist Exhibition in the RDS on the 9th of January. Seán Harrington, the architect who designed the bridge came in to speak to us this morning.

We sat around a big table. We had lots of questions for him which he answered and explained through drawings. He told us how the bridge was going to support the Luas and about it’s design. We don’t want to tell you about that now though, because it will ruin the surprise of our project!

Seán was really helpful. He gave us lots of ideas for our project. He was really interesting and it was a very different morning for us! He told us a funny story about why he wanted to be an architect and I think its given some of us ideas about being an architect or a designer when we're older.
