Taking Sides - using speech marks

We have been learning how to use speech marks in our writing. We have seen them in our book, Taking Sides, and imagined a conversation between two characters in the book.

The following could be a conversation that took place between Peter, the young school boy and Mr. McMahon, a rebel gun fighter, who is also a teacher in Belvedere College

“Class dismissed” said McMahon.
Peter went up to McMahon and said, “I know what you’re doing!”
“Pardon Peter?” replied McMahon
“I know you’re working for the rebels” Peter said.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about” answered McMahon.
“Sir, I know you are, I heard you saying it” said Peter
“Keep your voice down boy” replied McMahon
“I want to be a part of the rebels” demanded Peter
“What?” questioned McMahon shocked.
“I want to be part of the rebels, Sir” repeated Peter.
“No” stated McMahon
“Why not sir?” questioned Peter
“Because you’re too young”
“Just give me a chance, I’ll do anything, I’ll smuggle guns, ammo, anything” Peter begged.
“Okay, you can be in it but remember don’t tell anyone” whispered McMahon
“Okay sir” agreed Peter
“Now you may leave” said McMahon

Peter was looking at the sir. Quietly he said, “I know who that man was”. The sir replied, “What are you talking about?” Peter hissed, “You know what I’m talking about, and I want to join!”
The sir insisted that Peter could not join because of all the things he might see, when fighting for freedom. He was too young to see such things.
Peter argued, “I’m not taking no for an answer”. He kept at the sir for days but the sir was having none of it. Finally Peter went to the sir one day and said “I will go to the headmaster and tell him you are a rebel!” Gradually Peter managed to persuade the sir. The sir was becoming very lethargic listening to Peter’s arguments every day. He tried to persuade Peter to leave the idea alone, saying “Peter you are too young and you have no proof that I am a rebel”. It didn’t work. They came up with a compromise, that Peter would be a messenger for the rebels, carrying letters from one to another and sneaking ammo for them.

As part of the One book, one community initiative, 6th class are reading the novel 'Taking Sides' by Brian Gallagher. Instead of me writing what it's about, here is some of the work the boys in 6th class have done so far.

Taking Sides,

The book I’m reading is called Taking Sides. I like the book so far and that it takes place in Dublin in the 1920’s.
So far, it’s about a 13 year old boy called Peter who goes to Belvedere and plays rugby. He was at a British Army checkpoint when he felt a man tugging at his bag.
Peter looked at the man whose forehead was pouring with sweat and he was clearly nervous.
Peter got very nervous going through the checkpoint but he managed to get through because the British soldier did not look in his bag!

Taking Sides is a good book. I like the way it tells you where it is taking place and who it is about. The only thing I don’t like is how he is one place one minute and the next minute he is another place.
Last year Brian Gallagher wrote another book about a boy and a girl. It was called Across the Divide. I would give this book an eight out of ten so far!

The book our class is reading is called Taking Sides. The boy’s name is Peter, and he is 13. He goes to Belvedere which is a private school.
One day he was coming home from a rugby match. There was a checkpoint on North Earl Street. As he went to join the checkpoint, there was a man already there acting weirdly. Peter knew he had something on him that he shouldn’t have. The man then put a gun into Peter’s bag and told him to relax.
Peter finally moved forward in the queue at the checkpoint. There was a British soldier at the checkpoint and he let Peter go through. He got very lucky. The person who put the gun into his bag was waiting around the corner to collect it from Peter.

Boxer of the Year

Or Trip to Glasnevin Cemetery

Last week we went to Glasnevin Cemetery to look at some graves and I thought it was fantastic. My favourite grave was when I saw Daniel O'Connell's and his families' coffins. I was absolutely surprised when I was told that if you open one of his families coffins their skin and hair would be still there. We were also allowed to touch Daniel O'Connell's coffin because they say it is supposed to be good luck but I couldn't touch it because it sent shivers up my spine!

Bridget told us about a Man U player, Liam Whelan. His grave has Man U tops all over it. We went into a big Museum and Aaron saw the Ballymun flats. It was teh best trip in the school.

I saw Michael Collins' grave. His grave is always filled with flowers. On Valentines Day there was a lot of red roses on his grave. He was engaged and his fiancée found another man and married him and they had kids. She asked her husband that when she died she wanted to be buried next to Michael Collins. She was burring around seven graves away from him. We saw Eamon De Valera's grave and his families'. He spent half his life as Taoiseach of Ireland. Eamon is in the same plot as his son and he is next to all of his family.

My Diary By Evan Pierce

The letter I never thought would arrive to me just came. I had 2 days to think about what I was going to do. I had 2 options, I could go to the camp or hide. I chose to go to the camp.
When the day came I was really scared. When I got there I managed to get around the back of the camp where there was no guards. I hid there for a good hour or so until midnight came. I made a move to the seaside to try and hijack a boat to get to a different country. When I got the boat I headed east to England and that way I would be safe.
When I was going to hijack the boat, I met my friend and he was in the same situation as I was so I stuck with him. When we got on the boat he saw the keys on the seat. His name was Darren. HE knew how to drive boats to o. I let him drive. I just gave him directions to England. When we got to England we decided to sell the boat.

30/May/1940

Today is the day that we have to go to the concentration camp but no, I’m not going! I am going to ditch going and I am leaving with my family. WE will go to the underground railway and hope to avoid being seen to leave Germany. WE will wait until they stop searching and hopefully they will have a bit of food because we will have to leave just in the clothes on our back. I have my diary as well. Hopefully we are able to leave this torturous country. My nerves are gone. Every second I see someone I get butterflies because I think they will rat me out.

Day 2: on the run 31/Mai/1940

We found an old barn where we could stay last night. For breakfast we had to eat bits of hay to survive. After a couple of hours a strange man with a big hat and a horse and carriage came past and I ran to the man. I begged him for help. After a few minutes of telling the man what had happened he agreed to help us leave the country. He said ‘I can take you to the docks where you and your family will take a boat to England’. So the man took us there and he said, ‘I can help you no more’. Luckily we got on to the boat where we went to England. I was able to get a job in England. After months there we settled down and lived like a normal family and never went back to Germany again.

At the beginning of March Mr. Bailey chose a football team to play in a soccer league. We played against St. Kevin’s school and we beat them 4-1. Me, Evan, Conor, and Dylan Kelly scored. It was a brilliant match. The following week we set off to play Malachy’s school we beat them 3-1 and I scored three goals. We all played well. Then the week after, we headed out to Fairview to play against Virgin Mary. It was a massive result for us as we won 8-0. Me and Dylan Grimes scored two and Brandon, Evan, Conor Darcy and Leroy scored one. Today we are playing an away match against a school from Blanchardstown- I hope we win!

Every Thursday my class and the 6th class girls go down to the hall to work and discus with Localise how we can help our community in every way we can. Our first week with localise we picked our team captains and our team names. We also made a presentation to show how we will raise money for our initiative to help our wonderful community. On our second week with the volunteers from Price Waterhouse Coopers each group designed and presented a community which had everything we would like in it. The third week we made a list of who we could help in our community and we came up with a top three. These are organisations concerned with cancer, special needs and the elderly. We have three more weeks to discuss, help and take action to help community.

Across The Divide
During the month of March the schools in our community decided the read the book “Across the Divide” by Brian Gallagher. Nineteen schools are taking part, fourteen primary schools and five secondary schools. The book is about a young boy and girl who form an unlikely friendship during the 1913 lockout. When all the schools are finished we will have a quiz. We have two more chapters to read until we are finished and we are really enjoying it!

Wayne Rooney

My name is Brandon Arkins and I’m writing about Wayne Rooney and Manchester United. Wayne Rooney was born in Liverpool in 1986. When he was growing up as a kid he joined Everton’s academy. He was doing very well and he got his debut at the age of 16. He scored in his debut against Arsenal and it was from 25 yards out, it went straight into the top corner.
Two years later Manchester United signed him. In his first year at United he scored something like 18 goals in his first season. His second season at United he might have scored the nicest goal ever. He was talking to the referee outside the box and had just turned around and seen the ball coming for him. He just smacked it on the volley and it went straight into the top corner. Manchester United won the Premier League that year and the next. In his fourth year at United he was voted the best player in the world. The next year United won the Premier League and Rooney scored 23 goals in the league. The season after that United won the double and bet Chelsea in the final of the Champions League on penalties in Moscow in 2008. In 2009 United were beaten by Barcelona in the final of the Champions League and Ronaldo left for Real Madrid but the good bit is that United won the Premier League. The season after that wasn’t great because United only won the Carling Cup. At the end of that season Rooney wanted to leave United because of personal problems but he didn’t, he stayed on at the greatest club ever- Manchester United!

During Engineer's week we visited a naval ship on the Quays. It was called the L.E Ciara. We got to meet with the crew on board and had the opportunity of learning all about what life was like on the ship.

We were shown the control room, fire equipment, guns, the bridge, radar and communication machines and cabins. It was so interesting that some of us are considering a career in the navy!!

Last week we went on a trip to Ballsbridge to visit the Engineers Ireland building. They had a maths workshop on for Engineers week. We got to play loads of maths games and solve puzzles. They were great fun especially the 3d version of the game Connect 4. Even though it rained on the way there and back we still really enjoyed ourselves. Some of us won t-shirts and badges too!

Every Friday we do cooking with Mr. Bailey. Four boys from the class are usually chosen to cook. Last week we made banana muffins. We used flour, milk, eggs, sugar, cooking oil and bananas. You mix all the ingredients together and then you spoon them into the muffin cases. They are cooked in the oven for 15 minutes. They were scrumptious!!

My trip to Manchester

Last weekend I went on a trip to Manchester. Myself, my aunt Louise, her boyfriend Joey and my cousin James went.

We arrived in Dublin airport at 4.30 a.m on Saturday morning. We were delayed for three hours due to the snow. We reached Manchester early that morning and quickly checked into our hotel.

After breakfast we went shopping and then it was on to Old Trafford to see probably the best team in the world play. They beat Blackburn 7-1 and Bervotov scored 5 goals. He's in the history books now!

The next day we took a tour of Old Trafford. It cost us 10 pounds each. We were taken all over the grounds including the dressing rooms and the museum. I got pictures of me holding some of the cups that they have won and also some of their jerseys.

We arrived home safely late on Sunday night. I really enjoyed the trip and best of all my aunt treated me. Thanks Louise!

The Gannet is a common seabird around the Irish coast. It is white with a pale yellow head. It is between 85 and 97cm in length. It has huge wings, a pointed tail and a long bill. It can dive from 40 metres into the water at speeds of up to 100 km per hour. It tucks away its wings and streamlines its body. They have air sacs in their face and chest under their skin which act like bubble wrapping,cushioning the impact with the water. Its diet is fish. By Brendan Lucas.

This morning our class was asked to help out with the annual Halloween parade in the community. We headed for the junior boy's school and walked from there, around the IFSC and finally to the community centre. There was lots of activities to do there including, apple bobbing, bubble blowing, pass the parcel and a magician. All the children had lots of fun and there were some great costumes to be seen!

Last week our class went on a trip to learn about the Royal Canal. It was all made by hand.
They started it in 1790 and finished it in 1817.
It cost about two million Euros to build.
Its 90 miles long and joins the River Liffey with the River Shannon. After a lot of work it has reopened to boats. It has 46 locks. It was originally built to carry passengers and goods to and from Dublin.
We saw lots of wildlife. Ducks, birds, moorhens, pigeons and water rats. We saw one rat running with a lump of bread in its mouth! We saw Ash, Sycamore and even a hurley tree outside Croke Park. We spoke to a man who was working on cleaning up the Canal. He is a World Champion Fisherman. He told us all about the fish that live in the canal. It was a great trip. We enjoyed ourselves.

It was great to have Alan Kelly in the classroom and it was nice for him to meet the Larriers Legends! From one legend to another in sixth class we reckon!!

The tree of seasons
We have just started to read a novel in 6th class. It’s The Tree of Seasons by Stephen Gately. Stephen was a ex-pupil of ours and became world famous through singing with Boyzone. We are proud to read this book. The book is a fictional story with all sorts of weird and wonderful supernatural creatures. We've only read a few chapters so far and it seems to be a good read.

Place Names in Our Area

We learned about some of our local place names:
Coburg Place: was called after Queen Victoria's husband.
Commons Street: was named after the Commissioners of Dublin. It is said that Molly Malone lived here.
Guild Street / Mayor Street: These were called after titles in the Corporation of Dublin.
Seville Place: Some people think this street got its name from oranges.
It got its name from the capture of Seville in Spain by the British in 1812.
Sheriff Street: was named after one of the titles of office existing in the Corporation of Dublin in 1773.

Martin Luther King

Martin Luther King
We learned about Martin Luther King in history. He was born in Alabama USA in 1929. He fought for Civil Rights for black people. He wanted them to have the same rights and conditions as white people. He was a religious man, a pastor. He only used non-violent methods to achieve his aims.

In 1965 he organised a mass march from Alabama to Washington. He made his famous "I have a dream" speech here. He was shot on April the 4th 1968. America had lost a great leader and the world became a poorer place without him.

This small clip takes place in Washington D.C. outside a sandwich bar. A man walks by Walter Beckett and hands him a brief case with a small computer in it. A pigeon flies up to Walter and wants his donut, so he flicked a small bit of donut onto the ground for the pigeon to go for it. The pigeon wants the biggest bit but the man wont give it to the pigeon, suddenly the pigeon attacks the man so the man threw the donut onto the ground and the pigeon flew onto the brief case and it fell onto the ground with the pigeon stuck inside of it.

The pigeon doesn't know what to do so it starts to press a load of buttons. One of the buttons was shooting out a laser and another button shoots out gunshots. Another button makes the brief case fly. And while the pigeon was flying it was shooting out the gun shots and laser. When the man gets the pigeon to stop with the donut he throws it in the air so the pigeon wold be distracted and looking at the doughnut. The man brushes the pigeon out of the but the doughnut falls and hits the button and the button is set to launch a rocket towards Moscow and blow it up!

The rocket launches and the man flies up to it and tries to fire a few shots at the rocket with the few bullets he has left. So he chooses another setting to a mini-rocket and he is about to fire when the pigeon lands again on the briefcase in front of the mini-rocket, looking for the doughnut.

The man opens the briefcase and the doughnut falls out again down to the street and the pigeon follows it. So back to where the man is about to shoot the mini-rocket. He does and blows up the rocket and saves Moscow and a world war. The man then flies down and lands right beside where the bird is eating the doughnut.

And two seconds later a part of the rocket lands and squashes the bird. Brilliant!

The Octopus Adventure

This story takes place in a small village in France where two octopuses lived. They lived in a seafood shop. The two octopuses were in love but one day the female octopus was sold to a tall, skinny man. He owned a van that sold seafood to restaurants. The outside of the van had a logo that showed octopuses being cut and served!

As the man started his van, the other octopus who remained in the tank leapt out and chased the van. The man took off - the chasing octopus scaled the side of the van and moved towards the window. He tried to help the girl octopus out of the box but the man sees him. As the man was trying to grab the male octopus the girl grabs the handbrake sending her and the boy flying out the window and making the man crash!

The man starts the van again and tries to run over the octopuses but they jump from a wall into a pool in a back garden. Now they jump from one pool to another as the man chases after them. They take big leaps from one pool to another. Eventually the man garbs the boy octopus - he thinks he has him. WRONG!!

The octopus grabs on to an electric wire and sits there while the man drives past in his van and falls into the water below the village wall. Now you think it's over. WRONG AGAIN!!
A seagull garbs the boy octopus from the wire and flies away. Now the girl octopus is mad so she pulls the wire back and swings herself towards the seagull. I pity the seagull.

This story takes place outside the gates of heaven when a little man comes up from hell to try to make it to heaven. But outside the gates there is a little fat man who chooses who gets in and who doesn't.
The fat angel took the man's appeals case and pretended to read it. Then the angel took out a stamp and stamped 'denied' on the case, then he dropped it back down to hell. The little man was shocked and very sad that he didn't get in.
Then the fat angel started pull the leaver up and down. The little man was going up and down making him smack his head aginst the rock he was on. Suddenly the angel started to choke on a donut and fell of his cloud. The angel tried to fly back up but he was too heavy. He asked the man from hell to pull him up.
The little man helped him up to his cloud. They started to talk to each other for a while. Out of nowhere the angel pushed the man's weight off the rock and he fell with it. But the little man from hell turned into an angel and flew into heaven. Then the fat angel from heaven turned into the fat man from hell.

On the 16th of March our class went to Bull Island. We went to the Bull Island visitor centre.

We saw the bones of a whale and a mummified bat. The short eared owl and the long eared owl migrate to Bull Island. We were shown a slide show about all the animals that live on Bull Island.

After that we played rugby and ran over sand dunes.

We picked teams and played. My team lost and the other team won. We all got smashed up, especially by Leon. Check out our photographs above! It was cold and windy but it was great! One of the best trips!

Trip to Bull Island

Last Tuesday we visited Bull Island. It was a long walk to the island from the bus stop. When we reached the Bull Island Visitor's Centre went into the little house to learn about birds and science. We learned about other animals too. We saw edible crabs, velvet crabs, the common seal, long eared owl, bats, kestrels, glowfish and the bones of a dolphin.

We also did about energy and solar panels. We put a long strip of glass at a light to see if the fan worked. It did work and we know that light can be a source of energy now.

After that we had lunch and walked on the beach and in the dunes. We played some rugby on the way home too. It was class!!

When we were using clay we decided to make clay people and clay monsters. It was great fun. I made a clay footballer. Jordan made a clay monster .Nathan made a football boot. Darrell made a footballer. Josh made a Larriers crest.
Everyone had fun making clay things out of clay but there was clay everywhere. It was on the floor and on the doors! You could make anything out of it. After we had made it and it dries, Breda paints it with you. We brought them home after a couple of days when they had dried.

The Dagger of Truth

The Amazon. A jungle that contains many secrets. The Mayans once inhabited this jungle. They built amazing temples. Inside these temples were amazing treasures. Treasures that today would be worth millions. One man is seeking out these treasures.
He has tracked down an item known as the ‘Dagger of Truths’. He is now closing in on the whereabouts of this ancient artefact. This search has lead him to a temple in the heart of the Amazon jungle. The sound of the animals in the jungle echoed. Startled. Not by a tiger or a puma, but a man. This man was about to make history.
The sun overshadowed the temple as the man stepped through the undergrowth of the jungle. He continued to the temple. The doors were bashed in. Inside the temple there was no light. He walked on. On the ground there was a torch. Luckily he had brought his lighter. He lit it. Now he could see.
Engravings on the walls told the story of a chief. It describes how this chief brought the dagger here. As he walked on the temple started to widen. Soon he was standing in room that had giant pillars equally spaced all around. In the very centre there were steps. Atop these steps was what he had been looking for. The ‘Dagger of Truths’.
He walked towards the steps not noticing what was about to happen. He had stepped on a stone tile. It began to go down. It was a trap! He ran for the dagger. Arrows firing form both sides of the walls. Missing him, but only just. He managed to grab the dagger by the handle. The arrows stopped. The daggers blade was glass and green. The handle was silver. A secret door opened at the other end of the room. He went through. Inside was a small room.
In this room there was a giant circular stone calendar at the end. He walked over, cautious of his actions. The calendar was set in years, months and days. He noticed something in the middle. A slit small enough for the daggers blade to fit in. This could be another trap. He was about to gamble his life. He shoved the blade of the dagger in.
At first there was nothing, then the calendar began to turn. First the closest to the blade. The day. Then the month and after that the year. It came to a halt. The entire calendar pushed into the wall. All except for the top three symbols. It was now clear.
The symbols revealed a date. Probably the most important date in our history since the birth of Jesus Christ. The end of the world!
“He’s here, I know it”. He was astounded how quickly they had found him. He took the dagger and began to look for a door. He started by looking at the walls. It didn’t take long. He pressed a tile on the wall and soon a door appeared. He went in as the door closed behind him. A man walked into the room with the calendar. Followed by men with guns.
“We’re too late”. He walked towards the calendar. “ Get me Professor Decovek”.

Dancing Raisins

Equipment

A jar glass of water, a fizzy drink e.g. 7up or fizzy water and the main thing, a hand full of raisins.

Information

The raisins are heavier than the drink so they sink to the bottom of the drink. In the fizzy drink though, they collect bubbles at the bottom of the jar, and these bubbles help the raisins dance up the jar to the surface. With the bubbles of carbon dioxide, the raisins are ligther than the drink so they rise to the top.

Experiment

Drop a handful of raisins into glass.

Drop a handful of raisins into 7up.

After a while the raisins will rise to the surface.

What I noticed

I noticed that the raisins went to the surface of the fizzy drink but when they got there the bubbles burst and the raisins went back down. Also, after a while the fizz went flat and the raisins did not go as fast as they did at the start.

Our Assembly

Last week it was our turn to do the assembly and Luke and I were the presenters. We did a 'Teachers Challenge'. The teachers had to listen and arrange the lyrics of Don’t Stop Believing by Journey. We had cut them up in class. The words were cut up on a sheet in front of them. We helped each teacher do it. Ms O’Carroll won as she was first finished and she got a bag of Mars bars for her class.
Then we did the Students of the Month award me, Taylor, Alex and Nathan Barrett won it in our class. We will go bowling at the 'Plex for it.
Then we moved on to Classroom of the Month award and 5th class won so they got a bag of Mars bars too.
After that we put on the song agin and which ever class sang the best singers got to go first. 2nd class went out first then 4th then 3rd and eventually 5th. Everyone said that we did the best assembly ever!!

Experiment 3. Can you stand against a wall and raise your opposite leg?

I thought it would be easy to stand with your feet apart, with one foot shoulder and head touching the wall and raise your other leg. Dead easy or is it??!!! When you are against the wall you can't move your leg off the wall. One of the lads made sure we didn't move our head, shoulder or foot off the wall. When you try to lift your other leg off the wall you fall. I did it i kept falling off the wall. Because I lifted my leg up too low and my centre of gravity was not over my two feet! Very hard unless you have incredible balance!

I thought I Can you stand against the wall without moving your knee off the wall, no problem. Its harder than you think. If you can touch your toes you might be able to do it but when I did it, I moved my centre of gravity from over my feet and I fell over. One of the lads made sure we didn't bend our knees. I wasn't able to pick up the coin, it was too hard.

Harder than it seems!! When you are standing your centre of gravity is over your feet. When you sit down or are bending forward your centre of gravity is over the chair. To stand up you must move to get your centre of gravity over your feet but it is impossible to stand up if you don't lean forwards. When I tried it I nearly got it. But I nearly fell back any time I was pushing up because the chair kept on moving back!

Our Pulse and Heartbeat

Last week in school we learned about active pulse, resting pulse and the heart! It was great! First we took our pulse sitting down, on our wrist or neck or behind the knee, with two fingers. Then we ran on the spot for 1 min and my active pulse was going very fast! My resting pulse was 44 beats per second and my active pulse was 105. I felt great but my legs were sleepy!

We learnt about the heart, and the way system of blood vessels, arteries, veins and capillaries is over 60,000 miles long! That’s long enough to go around the world more than twice! And the adult pumps about 5 quarters of blood each minute-approximately 2,000 gallons of blood each day-throughout the body. You can see us in the photos taking our resting pulse, then exercising and counting our active pulse after!

Daniel O' Connell was born in Co Kerry in 1775. He came from a Catholic family that was very wealthy so they managed to keep their land by giving the government money even in spite of the penal laws.

While he was over in France studying to be a lawyer he saw much bloodshed during the French Revolution and that was what turned Daniel O Connell against violence. O' Connell was a clever lawyer and a fine speaker. His aim was to abolish the penal laws.

When he got home to Ireland there was a election in Co. Clare to be come a member of parliament which is now in London because The Act of Union. He told all the members of the parliament that the penal laws were unfair and that is why the penal laws were abolished. All thanks to Daniel O Connell.

After the 1798 rebellion many people in Britain were afraid that Ireland might rebel again and get support from other countries. The best way to prevent this England felt was to unite the two countries under the one parliament . This parliament would meet at Westminister in London and the Irish Parliament would be dissolved.Lots of lands lords and people did not like this because they would lose land and power. On January 1st, 1801, the first day of the Act of Union kicked in. It lasted until 1922.
There were lots of ways that the act of union affected Ireland
1. Laws from Ireland were passed on to the parliament in Westminister in London
2. There was free trade between the two counties
3. Ireland sent 100 MP's to the parliament but there was almost 600 MP's altogether

But really Ireland wasn’t happy – they lost too much influence. We created 'Comic Strips' to tell the story in class, you can see them above!

Every eye has a blind spot

While we were studying the eye, we did another experiement which showed how everybody has a blind spot in their eye. We held up a piece of paper in front of us and there was a circle and a cross on the sheet. You had to look at the cross while shuting your right eye. You bring the page slowly to your eye and the closer it gets you can't see the circle. I didnt get it at first but a few seconds later it began to work. It was weird! I never knew you could do that before until my teacher showed me. My blind spot is in my left eye.

Today I studied the eye and studied about the dominant eye. The dominant eye means that one eye is stronger than the other. To do this you must line a pen or some object up with a vertical ine, with your two eyes open. When I closed my left eye, the pen stayed in the same place.But when I closed my right eye it went completly off track so my right eye is my dominant eye.

Our trip to the Young Scientist Awards

On the 15th of January I went to the RDS to see the Young Scientist Awards. We went to the see robots wars first of all. We saw two of the robots fighting together in a big cage with bulletproof windows. The names of the two of them were Pressure and Saint.
Later we went around to the exhibition stands and there were lots of good stands with projects. We saw a project with a lie detector and one about the play station that could make you more aggressive the more you play it. I thought they were good projects. My favourite was the lie detector because if you lie to someone it can pick up the lie, and the lie detector will tell you if what the person says it is true or false. It might be good to have in my class!

We studied reaction times today. First we cut out the reaction timer strip, we folded it down the centre vertical line and glued the two sides together. We made a small hole near the bottomand put a paper clip with blu-tack on oit to act as a weight. Luke held the timer up in the air and dropped it, I had to try catch it at the fastest time I could get. My times were

The Story of Miley Cyrus, the Late, Late and Me

About three weeks ago RTE came into the school to interview our school guitar group.
It was for a Stephen Gately tribute which they were making. When the people from RTE came in we were all excited. we went into the 'Parents Room', talked a bit, then went to work. We were playing The Climb by Miley Cyrus on our guitars. We took about five shoots and we were finished.

Two weeks later our guitar teacher, Ms. Larkin, got a phone call from RTE saying that Miley Cyrus had heard us playing The Climb and that she was so impressed that she gave us tickets to the Late Late show when she is on it tomorrow night. When we heard we were so excited. Can't wait, it's on Friday!!

Winning in Croke Park

I woke up nervous and then my mates knocked for me. So I got up, dressed and got my breakfast and off the way we went to Croker. So when we got there, we had to wait till our match was on. So we were looking at another match.
Before the match was on we had to go down the dressing rooms to get dressed and get warm before the match kicked off. When we were warm enough we went out to the pitch to get the match started.
The ref blew the whistle and the game kicked off! Shane kicked the ball over the bar for the first point and we were winning by my point until they came back. It went to extra time and the rest is history!

I was nervous at first but when I walked onto the pitch, it felt like I was king of the world or something. Even if we didn’t win I still would have been happy for just playing in Croker. So when we won, it was the best moment in my life, people cheering us on. It was great to see all my mates happy and Ms. Harte and Mr Brennan and especially for the school.

The goal I scored was lovely - from the half way – I’m not even messin’!! That goal finished it because Nato scored 1 minute before me. That meant we were in the lead by six points. We won, it was great, the first team from our school in 56 years to win at Croke Park!

We scored points, goals and had some fun,
The best of our Gaelic hasn’t even begun,

On Saturday our nerves didn’t show,
We went on the pitch and played with our normal flow.
In extra-time we kept their score to zero,

Caring in the Community - Present Time

This week we are going to the offices of PWC to put together the gifts we have collected so far and wrap them with the people from PWC.
This year we are doing a project with PWC and Localise with Derek. We started it about 4 weeks ago and about 2 weeks ago we decided we were going to help the Dublin Simon Community. Two people out of the Dublin Simon Community came in and talked to us about what they do up there.
So to help them we decided to collect the gifts they wished for. We all designed our own Christhmas cards and posters which we will put on the sboxes which we will fill with lots of presents of their choice and give it to the people who live in the Dublin Simon Community.
The 3rd and the 4th of December we will sell the cards in the PWC building to all the people who work there . This was a big success last year and this year we hope it will be even bigger and better this year and when we are over there we sing lots of Christmas Carols to create a Christams atmosphere.

The Awful Egyptians

We studied the Egyptians last week. We learnt about mummies and tombs and ancient beliefs and gods.
Mummies
When an Egyptian King, Queen or Noble died the Egyptians would preserve their bodies by wrapping their bodies in bandages. Their bodies would be dried out in chemical natron to prevent it from rotting away. This would take about 70 days to complete .
Tombs
When an Egyptian King, Queen or Noble die they would be put in a tomb, a tomb is like a coffin. The biggest tomb is a pyramid, a pyramid would be filled with all thier jewellery and all of their possessions. The pyramids had many secret passage ways and traps so when people tried to rob the pyramid they would get lost .
Ancient Beliefs
Ancient Egyptians believed that there was an afterlife. People who died were sent to the afterlife, first your heart had to be weighed and if your heart was lighter than the feather of truth you would be sent there. If your heart was heavier than the feather of truth you be sent to hell. The Kings, Queens and Nobles would go straight to the afterlife and their hearts would not have to be weighed..
Egyptian Gods
The people of Egypt believe in eight different gods and their names are Ra, Sobek, Isis, Seth, Osiris, Amon, Horus and Anubis . Anubis has the head of the jackal and Ra has the head of a falcon and sun disk .

We studied the Roman Empire recently and discovered many interesting things, cool things and gross things.

Julius Caesar

The first thing we learned about was Julius Caesar. We learned that Julius Caesar designed most of the great things in Rome such as the sewage system, he was one of the first to use housing estates and tall buildings. He was famous for wearing red boots. Unfortunately he was killed in the Senate because the power was going to his head. He wanted to become the most powerful emperor. He was killed by a man called Brutus.

Food

The next thing we learned was that Romans ate really weird food such as snails soaked in milk, boar's heads and brains soaked in sauce. Their main food was pottage, a bit like stew.

The Army

The next thing was the army. The Roman army was one of the tougest armys in the world. You would have to serve 25 years until they become a citizen of Rome.

Facts

Here are so more facts. In Rome children in Rome had no power. Their parents could get them executed for disobedience. After meals they would go to the vomititarium, probably becuase they ate gross food sometimes. They made one of the the first swimming pools. They called it the Romans baths.

It was a disaster many people died and lost lots over its chaos. Ireland was also affected but as usual they pulled through it many people had to work in workhouses.

Caring in the Community

This year we are working with Localise, PWC and the Dublin Simon Community. Last year we worked with Localise and PWC to raise money for Temple Street Hospital. Click here to read about last year. This year we are helping the homeless. There is a place in Sean McDermot Street called the Dublin Simon Community Shelter. It is for people who are homeless and people that may have had some problems in their life. The people that live in Dublin Simon get their own room.
Last week the manager of Dublin Simon came in and start telling us about Dublin Simon. He brought a lady that lived in Dublin Simon and she told us all about her life, how it can be hard and difficult sometimes. That is why we want to help Dublin Simon so the people will know someone cares about them.
We are giving them a box with lots of presents in it. We made a load of Christmas cards too.We hope they like the presents that are in each box. We hope to give every person in the shelter their own box of presents this Christmas.

A Dark Night

It was a dark night. I was walking by the old house on the Third Avenue of Seville Place. Suddenly Vlad the Vampire appeared in the window.
It was a dark night but I didn't care. I ran up the stairs to see if he was still there. He was lying in the middle of the floor. I tried to take a picture but he disappeared into the air. A fire started in the house! I ran down the stairs but Vlad the Vampire locked the door. I had to jump out the window and into a lode of thorns! OOW!!
I called the fire brigade. They went and put it out.The house was black from the smoke. I went back in and went up stairs to see if he was still there. He wwas there. He was dead but his picture was still on the wall, the fire did not touch it.

It's Manchester United versus Arsenal, the cup final!
Straight to it - Manchester United are messing around - oh no! Neville loses the ball! Arshavin gets it. Vidic is desperate - he lunges. Crack!!! Vidic fouls Arshavin. Silence. The ref slowly moves his lips to his whistle - oh no! It's a penalty to Arsenal and a red for Vidic!!. Ferguson fumes! But Van der Saar comes to the rescue! and saves it.
Then Giggs runs the pitch, shoots and hits the top bar, it was so close! Next Rooney gets the ball outside the box, 20 yards out and gets lifted. It's a free kick. The final whistle is next. It is up to Scholes. He shoots. "Go on" scream the crowd together. He scores!
It's a miracle, MAN UNITED WIN THE FA CUP !!!

One day a tourist from Ireland went to visit a country called Romania, in the year 1722. His name was a Moses Murphy. During his holiday Moses decided to visit a gallery. He was at an art gallery looking at the work of Popescu when he felt sleepy.
Suddenly he woke up. He was in a castle! He was in shock! People were surrounding him. People with big long faces, big long nails and eyes. They were closing him into the corner.
But suddenly...... 'Stop' says a deep voice. 'I'm so sorry for my butlers troubling you'. Moses says sleepliy " What am I doing here?". But the man in the big black cloak did'nt respond.
Moses asked again. The man said "You had a bad fall in the gallery this morrning'. So the man asked Moses to eat with him. Moses thought sure why not. Moses asked the old man his name. The man said "Count Dracula''!
Moses said 'how can it be so?? Oh no!!'. Dracula pounced on Moses and drew the blood from his neck! The last thing moses said was 'how can it be!!'.
So still to this day Moses walkes around as a VAMPIRE in the castle in Romania. Be careful if you ever go there!

The Conker Champion '09

The 'Conker Championship '09' was held in school last week. It was one dry day in October.
We were having a conker competition. In my first match I played Taylor and I won.
Then I went on to beat Darell. it took ages but eventually I won so I went on to play Luke in the semi's - I won.
I was in the final with Alex.I knew it was going to be hard because Alex is good. We were only 2 minutes in the fight and it was his shot. He walloped it his hardest and his one smashed!! I won and everyone jumped on me and picked me up and gave me the 'kings chair'. I was delighted with my life. I didn't even think I was going to win but I did!!!

The 155th Floor

The Burj tower, 155 stories high. To be the worlds tallest building. There I stood with only a parachute. I got in by disguise, as a builder. It was the easy part. Here comes the hard part. I started climbing the crane perched on the top of the tower. I was careful not to slip, if I did I would fall and most likely die. Finally I reached the top of the crane. The cold air around me. Hard to breath this high up, but I still felt confident about this. I wasn't going to back down from this. With one last gasp of breath I jumped. Falling for 7 seconds. I pulled the cord, but it was jammed. I kept calm and tried to fix it, success. Just in time. I started gliding gently towards the ground.
August 6 12:32 pm I jumped from the Burj tower.

What is an insect?

Insects can be distingiushed from other small animals by their six legs and three body parts (head, thorax and abdomen) antennae, compound eye and wings (usually, but not always).

Insect abilities?

Insects have some amazing abilities. Grasshoppers can jump 40 times the length of its body, ants can carry objects that weight 100 times the weight of thier body.

Where do insects live?

Insects live everywhere, forests, deserts, jungles, grasslands, swamps, ponds and streams-even inside the bodies of other animals.

How many species of insects are there?

By current estimates there may be as many as 10 million different species. The most common group of insects are the beetles, butterflies and moths,ants, wasps and bees, flies, grasshoppers and crickets.

Apple Crumble

On Friday our class made apple crumble in cooking. The first thing we did was go into the kitchen to eat and Mr Candon got the fry he wanted.
We cut the apples to make make the crumble.
We made the crumble with margarine, brown sugar and dough. Then we put it in the oven to cook. We waited for a half an hour for the crumble to cook so we went into a room with Ger. We learned how to set up a table. This Friday we are going to have our parents over to Fáilte Ireland to cook dinner for them. We will be cooking white chicken with a white sauce and garlic bread. For dessert we will be having apple crumble again.

First we got our dough and rolled it. We needed flour so the dough wouldn't stick to the rolling pin or the table. When we had all of our dough in a circle we put tomato sauce on the surface of the dough. Next we put our toppings on it, we had a choice of onion, tomatoes, mushrooms, ham, chicken, pineapple , cheese and anchovies. We put the pizza in the oven and waited for it to go brown and crispy.

Fairy Cakes

We have recently started cooking classes with Fáilte Ireland. The chefs that are teaching us how to cook are Chef Caroline and Geraldine. It is really great up there. We each got a new uniform with cool steel capped boots. And a really cool chef's jacket, just like the cooks on tv.
Last week we made fairy cakes - we used butter, caster sugar, 2 eggs, raising flour and milk - and when we put them in the oven we got to choose toppings. We chose milk chocolate icing and white chocolate buttons. Very tasty!!
Next week we are going to make pizza!!

The Lord Mayor's Cup - The Final

When we got to The Lord Mayor's Cup Final we were against St.Gabriels. Outside we won the football,the peno's and we lost the racing. The people that competed for our school in the racing are my teacher Barry O Leary, and my friends Dean, Jordan, Shane, Alex, Taylor and William.
Inside it was basketball. The only one to score in the match was me. Back at the climbing wall I was on the same side that I lost on in the Semi-Finals. The people from my school that were competing are Andy (the sna) me, Alex, Shane D, Shane R and Leon. I slipped again on the wall and lost to a girl.
We all sat down and waited for the man with the results. We waited outside for the man with the results. He came out and announced that WE WON!!!!!! We got a trophy, gold medals and a picture with the lord mayor. Larriers Rule!!!!!!

Lord Mayor's Cup - The Semi-Final

When we heard about the Lord Mayor's Cup we were very excited. It sounded like it was fun and it was. When we won the first round we went through to the Semi-Final. When we got to the Semi-Finals we were against St.Vincents.
It was a draw in the football, we won the peno's and then the racing. Inside we were playing basketball. Paul from our school got the first basket in. Then one of the Vincent's players scored. Then I scored. We won 2-1 in the basketball.
Then we did wall climbing. I was against someone slow but he ended up winning because there was a part of the wall I couldn't reach. We all sat down (All the schools sat down) and waited for the results. The man came in with his whistle around his neck and his clipboard. We Did It!!!!!! We made it to the finals. Larriers Rule!!!!!!

11th Annual Lego Minds Roboshow

Yesterday myself, William, Dean and Alex went to the 11th annual Lego Minds Roboshow.We went with Breda.

We designed a building site based on what we see at Spencer Dock. The things we designed, built and brought were a crane, a cement mixer, a forklift, security hut and a fan.

It was great to go and see what other kids were doing around the county too.

There was a lot off great things there like some other schools had the new Lego.

One off them that I saw was a robot that can kick a ball and a swing like baseball bat.

We were there for most off the day so that was good for us!! It wasn't competing, it was just a place were we could see other people doing different things so that was cool too.

Victory in the Cup!!

Yesterday we had a match against our arch enemies O' Connell's. Our sir said it was like a local derby, a match between two teams from the same city - like Manchester United and Manchester City or Liverpool and Everton. Except this time it was Larriers against O' Connell's!!.

We played very good and I played left back and Willo, Haydo played in the center and ric played right.The defence did class and Deano, Leon played center-mid and Nato played left and Shayo played right and they played class.

Any time u would look at Deano he would be defending, running foward and just all over midfield! The same with Leon. Jordan and Taylor played up foward and sometimes Jordan helped out with the back and the midfield.

Willo and Haydo they were just BRILLIANT !!!!!! But iin the end we got 4 CLASS GOALS.... and that was enough to win - we are though to the next round of the cup - we want to make a little larrier's history 'cause it's our last year. C'mon the Larriers!!

First Match of the Season

Last week our school team went out to Edenmore to play our first football match of the new year. So it was going to be a different team to the one we had last year. It was going to be a bit different.
When we got to Edenmore, we were all getting ready for the match when Mr. Candon comes and tells us that he had forgotten the jerseys. We all laughed. So he had to get some jerseys off St. Malachy's, the team we were going to be playing against. The jerseys were tiny but we got them to fit us.It was very funny!!
The match started. The team was looking good and then we got off to a flyer when Jordan Lee put the ball into the back of the net. 1-0 to the Larriers. WHAT A START!!! Then a few minutes later Malachy's had a great chance their striker took around Sean in the goal and shot. He thought he had scored until Hayden ran back in and got the ball off the line! It was a let off for us.
So we got our act together and the ball came to Jordan. He passed it to me and I passed it to Shane Boyle. He took it around the keeper and scored 2-0 to the Larriers.
Then a minute later I got the ball in midfield and went on a run and scored 3-0 the Larriers.
The ref then blew the whistle for half time we were walking away with the game. The second half kicked off and we were up for it so we just played simple football just like United (something that Liverpool can't do) (Eh? Excuse me lads?? - The Sir) and we got another goal. Willo this time got through on goal and the keeper came out and he just dinked it over his head.
It was a cracker 4-0 to the Larriers, game over. The Larriers won their first game of the new season yeahhhhhhhhhhh.

St. Patrick's Day and the Leprechaun's Gold!

I couldn't believe my eyes. There was a leprechaun picking shamrock in the field next to my house. Every body knows that the leprechaun will tell you where a pot of gold is hidden if you catch them and let them go. So all i had to do was catch this leprechaun and then I'd be rich!So here's how I trapped the leprechaun.
I changed into my army camouflage suit. I got a trapping gun like the Ghostbuster's gun and snuck closer to the leprechaun. But I realised the gun was dead. I needed new batteries. I had to run back to my house to get them. Luckily when I returned the leprechaun was still there.
I slid the new batteries in. I crept down onto my front and made my way over to him. I shot the catching net. I got him and he said 'If you let me go I will show you my pot of gold'.
I let him go and he gave me his pot of gold. I was rich. I gave loads of money to charity. Then I bought loads of stuff and built a secret leprechaun hut for all leprechauans to stay and play in.

Lego Mindstorms (Part 7!)

When we were asked to design something from a building site, myself and Leon thought about a crane - there are lots of cranes on the sites around here, especially at Spencer Dock. There are usually cranes on every building site.
To build the crane we first needed to construct a solid base. We started to build the base of the crane then the arm. We used bricks for the base and beams for the arm. Then we put some beams across and carefully put string through the holes. This was attached to a pulley. We used string to lift stuff up.
We programmed the RCX box later on the whiteboard. We chose direction and times that the motor should move. We programmed the motor to go down for two seconds and then change, and move backwards for two seconds. It was tops!

Base Jumping!!

In the late hours of a Friday night on December 12th 2003 a base jumper named as Dean Byrne surprisingly got inside the Barj building in Dubai. It is the tallest building in the world. All he had was a tiny parachute, so why was he going to risk his life for something so stupid as that.
He had been sitting up there for 2 hours thinking of what way to jump and what way to land. So he took one last sup of his water and he counted to three and just took one big huge leap out into the freezing cold air of Dubai.
His face was plastered to the wind.He took just 8 seconds to fall from the tallest building in the world to the ground.He had pulled his parachute at 4 seconds because he was going that fast. He landed on a construction site just underneath the building. WHAT A STUNT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lego Mindstorms (Part 7!)

This week our sir asked us to create something that we would find on a building site. Myself and Jordan decided to build a forklift. At the start we didn't know where to begin! But then we remembered about pulleys and elastics. We started to try things out.
We built the two forks first and then attached them to the RCX box.We levelled the beams and put 4 big 8 hole beams. We built four of them and then we put them over the beam. We put the RCX box on, then it was level. We tried to see would it lift anything up?
We put a pencil on it and it lifted it up.Then we tried to put a rubber and a pencil on it and it lifted it up. We put four wheels on it and attached the jumped leads on to the RCX, we made it go along the floor backwards and forwards. It will help us lift things up on the building site like little pallets and other things.We our going to build a building site.
Then we could enter some competition. It is a really clever idea. Other boys are making a little cement mixer so if it needs to be moved anywhere the fork lifter will do it for us. We have a crane to lift up bricks an other things.

Lego Mindstorms (Part 7!)

This week each group was given a different task - we had to design something that you would find on a building site. Myself and Leandro decided to design a cement mixer. We knew from building fans that we could do it!
But we did not know how to make the mixer, so we used wheels.
While Leandro was building the base of the mixer, I was building the mixer.
In the picture above you see how Leandro connected his design to my design.
We have another picture of this but in the other picture, We have a light on it.
We also used two motors and an elastic to pull the wheels around.
It will be great building more lego. It will be awesome.

Lego Mindstorms! (Part 6)

This is how we built a fan. We built the base and we supported the motor with 2x4 and 1x2 bricks. After that we built the blades with 1x8 plates and we added a small blade with small 1x4 plates. Then we put a motor onto the RCX box. Next we got 2 pulley wheels and a blue band and a 1 stud axle to attach to the blade. We had a great time.
We could make a fan with 1 axle but we made one with 2 axles. It went faster than the one with one motor.
Last week we knew we could make a car with one motor and we put one motor in it. Corrie and Eric made a trailer for it so it could pull the RCX box. But we made another car with 2 axles. We decided to try this with our fan - we actually put three motors in it at one stage - the blades went super fast!!

Lego Mindstorms! (Part 6)

This week our design task was to create a windmill with a RCX box, pulleys and Lego.
We started with the base then we put a engine into the design. The pulley was next, then elastic. We attached the motor, pulley and elastic to each other. After that I got a lot of 4x12 peices to make the fan. Then we attached the RCX box to motor with a cable. I built one with Dean. The others were built by Jordan and Paul, Corrie and William. Alex, Leandro and Dillon designed another with really cool blades. My design with Dean is on the video - Play it!
